Just checking to see if you get the automatic update! Hope to hear from you soon!

I've been down here for almost a week, and after a few days with Kara and her family, and a quick weekend in Las Vegas, have been trying to block some time for small jobs, and time, of course, for my grandparents.

Grandma and Grandpa gave me a key to their house, and we signed up for a pass to get through the gated entry. Elise gave me the parking permit to hang on my rearview mirror. Last night, I interviewed (and got!) a tutoring gig up in Coto de Caza, where my name was left at a gate before I could get near the mansions. I've never had so many pieces of paper on my dashboard! And apparantly, all three are here for the duration of my time here in Strip Mall, California.

I'm enjoying spending time with my grandparents, cooking, cleaning, eating with them. I've dodged 'going to the mall' and 'getting my hair done' at least twice, so I think I may be safe for a week or two. What's really nice is the comfort level. Last night after dinner, my grandma and I sat on the couch. She was doodling on a piece of paper, drawing a profile of a beautiful woman. The tv wasn't on, and neither of us were talking. We were just sitting together. Silently. It was fabulous.

I start tutoring in the mansion (holy moly) today. The husband worked on the Shoah project (Steven Spielberg's project interviewing Holocaust survivors), which interviewed my grandma right after they released Schindler's List several years ago. Interesting connection.

I'll be back with more insight when I get some.
Now it's back to the gate.

Take care! I miss you all.

I made it!

HI all,

Just got to Aliso Viejo this evening after moving EVERYTHING out of my house. Some of it didn't fit in the car, so I had to leave it on the street with a "free" sign at the last minute. I took my time driving south, and saw my old friend Heidi and her 6 month old little boy, Sequoia. He has the biggest cheeks I have ever seen, and blue eyes the size of marbles. I've told a few stories about Heidi to you all. She was my friend that I lived with and also took classes with, and we had to make sure we didn't sit next to each other or we would chat too much.

After too quick of a stop with her, I went to Ojai to see my best friend Kara, her husband, Kevin, and two children. I haven't seen them for 6 months, and they have grown so much! McKenna is almost 5 now, and I was with Kara in the hospital when she was born. Taryn is almost 2 and a half, and still at the age where she thinks if she can't see something, it doesn't exist. She spent the weekend "hiding" from her aunt Rebecca by putting her hands over her eyes. Way too cute. I will post pics soon.

This morning, I drove from Ojai to Orange county through Los Angeles. The freeway was like a parking lot, but Francesca the Fabulous Flamingo kept me company. I spent a couple of hours with my grandma, and she showed me all the scarves she has been knitting. She wants me to take her to some stores to see if she can sell them. How cute is that? My grandpa came home in time to sit and chat for a little while, and then I had to leave to empty my car into my new home!

I am living with another college friend from Humboldt. She lives less than a mile from my grandparents, which is unbelievable luck. We just got back from dinner and catching up, and she kept me company while I unpacked my car into the spare bedroom. It's very strange to be in Southern California, but I am so excited to have this opportunity. My grandma already has things on the calendar to do with her. My grandpa plays cards on Thursday afternoons, so we will have some time to do whatever she wants. I have a lot of friends here with small children, which I think will be good for her. She is thrilled, and I am, too!

It's getting late, and I still have some things to unpack. Come find me again early next week, and I will post pics (with permission, of course!) of McKenna and Taryn. I'm sure you will think they are as cute as I do!

I miss you all so much- my friend Elise, who I am living with, is also a 6th grade teacher, so we have been sharing stories- all good, of course :) . I have loved all of your emails, and I will do my best to respond as soon as I can. Much love to you all!
Rebecca
